Today, Hear the Voice of the Great King

October 2, 2026Psalm 95:7By Paul

Psalm 95 calls us to joyful worship because the LORD is not merely a king—He is the great King above all. Everything belongs to Him, and yet He calls us the people of His pasture. When this great King speaks, we must not harden our hearts. Today is the day to hear His voice, worship Him, and obey.

Scripture

Psalm 95:7 KJV

Loading KJV Scripture…

When I read Psalm 95, what first stood out to me was the way the psalm begins.

“O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.”
— Psalm 95:1–2 (KJV)

The psalm begins with worship. Come, Sing, Rejoice, Give thanks. There is joy in coming before God. Then verse 6 takes worship even deeper:

“O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.”
— Psalm 95:6 (KJV)

We are invited not only to sing before Him, but to bow before Him because of who He is.

He Is the Great King

Psalm 95:3 says:

“For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.”

That phrase caught my attention. He is not merely a king. He is the great King and He is the great King above all gods. There is no authority higher than Him. There is no ruler above Him. There is no power that can challenge His throne. God is sovereign.

Sometimes we speak about God as though He is simply one part of our lives. Someone we call when we need help, comfort, direction, or provision. But Psalm 95 gives us a much greater picture. He is King. He is the Great King. He reigns over everything.

Everything Belongs to Him

The next verses say:

“In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.”
— Psalm 95:4–5 (KJV)

The deepest places of the earth belong to Him. The mountains belong to Him. The sea belongs to Him. The dry land belongs to Him.

Why?

Because He made them. Creation does not belong to itself. It belongs to its Creator and that means my life does not ultimately belong to me either. The God before whom we worship is the One who made us.

That gives verse 6 even greater meaning:

“Let us kneel before the LORD our maker.”

Worship is more than singing a Christian song. Worship is recognizing:

You are God.
You are King.
You made me.
I belong to You.

The Great King Is Also Our Shepherd

Then comes the verse that especially connects all of this for me:

“For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,”
— Psalm 95:7 (KJV)

The Great King above all gods is also our God. The Creator who owns the mountains and the seas calls us the people of His pasture. We are the sheep of His hand.

What a picture.

The One who rules everything is also near enough to shepherd His people. His sovereignty does not make Him distant. The Great King cares for His sheep.

But notice how verse 7 ends:

“To day if ye will hear his voice…”

That changes the direction of the Psalm. The God we have been singing to is now speaking to us and worship must become obedience.

Do Not Harden Your Heart

Verse 8 says:

“Harden not your heart…”

This warning becomes much more serious when we remember everything the Psalm has already told us. Who is speaking?

The great King above all gods. The One who holds the depths of the earth in His hand. The One to whom the mountains belong. The One who made the sea. The One who formed the dry land. The One who made us. The One who shepherds His people. So when He speaks, His voice is not something to treat casually.

We cannot say,

“I will listen later.”

“I know what God says, but I want to do things my own way.”

“I will obey when it is easier.”

Psalm 95 says:

Today.

Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart.

A Hardened Heart Has Consequences

The Psalm reminds Israel of what happened in the wilderness. They had seen God's works. They had experienced His provision. They had witnessed His power. Yet they continued to test Him and wander from Him.

Finally, verse 11 says:

“Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.”

That is a serious ending to a Psalm that began with joyful singing.

It begins:

“Come, let us sing.”

Then:

“Come, let us worship and bow down.”

Then:

“Today if ye will hear his voice…”

And finally comes the warning about what happens when people continually harden their hearts against God. That reminds me that genuine worship cannot stop with music.

I can sing. I can thank God. I can bow my head. I can even kneel.

But if God speaks through His Word and I deliberately refuse to listen, something is wrong with my worship. The Great King deserves more than my songs.

He deserves my obedience.

Today

Perhaps that is the word I need most from Psalm 95:

Today.

Not tomorrow. Not when circumstances improve. Not when obedience becomes convenient. Not when I finally feel ready. Its Today. If God is showing me something through His Word, I should respond today. If there is sin I need to confess, today. If there is something I need to surrender, today. If there is someone I need to forgive, today. If God is calling me back to Himself, today. Because the One speaking is not merely another voice among many voices.

He is the great King above all gods. Everything belongs to Him. And yet, by His grace, He says: “He is our God; and we are the people of his pasture.” What a privilege to belong to this King and what a serious thing to hear His voice.

Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart.
The Great King deserves more than our Worship. He deserves Our obedience and its today.

Reflection

Is there something God has already been showing me through His Word that I have been delaying or resisting? Do I worship God only with my words and songs, or does my worship also lead me to surrender and obedience? When I remember that He is the great King above all and that everything belongs to Him, what area of my life do I need to place back under His authority today?

Prayer

Lord, You are a great God and a great King above all. The deepest places of the earth are in Your hand. The mountains belong to You. The sea is Yours because You made it, and Your hands formed the dry land. You are my Maker, and I belong to You. Thank You that although You are the sovereign King over all creation, You also call us the people of Your pasture and the sheep of Your hand. Teach me to worship You with joy and thanksgiving. Teach me to bow before You with humility. Lord, when You speak through Your Word, keep my heart from becoming hard. Forgive me for the times I have known what You wanted from me but delayed obedience. Forgive me for wanting You as my Shepherd while resisting You as my King. Give me a soft heart that hears Your voice and responds. Help me not to wait until tomorrow to obey what You are showing me today. You are the Great King. You are worthy of my worship, my surrender, and my obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
