The God Who Corrects Me Is Still Restoring Me

October 7, 2026Psalm 99:8By Paul

God is holy. He does not overlook our sin, but He is also merciful and forgiving. Even when we face the consequences of our disobedience, we can return to Him. While we wait for restoration, He calls us to seek Him, pray, and faithfully serve where He has placed us.

Psalm 99:8 KJV

Today, while reading my daily portion, I stopped at Psalm 99:8. The same verse speaks about God forgiving His people and dealing with their wrongdoing. That made me think about my own life.

There have been times when I knew what was right, but I went my own way. I did not listen. Looking back, I can see the consequences of those choices. But I can also see God’s mercy. He has been bringing me back, teaching me, and restoring me.

The God who corrects me is still the God who forgives me.

His forgiveness does not mean my wrongdoing was small. God is holy. He does not call evil good simply because He loves me. But His holiness does not mean there is no way back.

Then I came to Jeremiah 29. God’s people were in Babylon, far from their homes. Their disobedience had brought judgment, and God said that He had caused them to be carried into exile. Yet He was still speaking to them. He told them to build houses, plant gardens, raise their families, and seek the peace of the city where they were living. He told them to pray for that city.

Think about that. They were to pray for the very place where they were living as captives. They could not change their situation immediately. But they could still obey God in it. They could still work, care for their families, and contribute to the good of the people around them. Sometimes I want God to restore everything first. Then I will serve. Then I will be useful. Then I will move forward.

But this passage challenges me.

What am I doing with the place and the season God has given me today?

Am I only asking Him to change my circumstances? Or am I also asking Him to change my heart?

His Plan Was Still There

It was to these people in exile that God said:

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Jeremiah 29:11 KJV

This promise did not mean they would return home the next morning. God had spoken of seventy years. They had to wait. But their waiting did not mean God had forgotten them. His purpose for His people was still there. He promised to hear them when they prayed and to be found when they sought Him with all their heart.

That gives me hope. I cannot use this verse to demand an easy life or an immediate answer. But I can trust the God who spoke it. He is faithful, even when restoration takes longer than I expect and while I wait, I can pray for the country where I live. I can seek the good of my community. I can work honestly, help someone, care for my family, and serve faithfully. There is still obedience for today.

A Father’s Correction

The New Testament says:

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…”
Hebrews 12:6 KJV

Correction is painful. Hebrews 12:11 acknowledges that. But it also tells us that God’s discipline produces the fruit of righteousness in those who are trained by it. Not every hardship is punishment for a particular sin. But when God exposes something wrong in my life, I do not want to harden my heart or make excuses. I want to listen. Lord, what are You teaching me? What do I need to confess? Where do I need to turn back?

There Is a Way Back Through Jesus

Our hope of forgiveness rests in Jesus Christ.

He died for our sins and rose again. We cannot erase our past or make ourselves righteous by trying harder. We need His mercy.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 KJV

If you have gone your own way, come back to Him. Confess your sin. Put your trust in Jesus. Receive His forgiveness, and let Him teach you to walk in obedience. Some consequences may remain. Some things may take time to rebuild. But you can begin walking with Him today.

He is holy enough to correct me, merciful enough to forgive me, and faithful enough to lead me forward.

Reflection

Is there something God is asking me to confess or change? While I wait for restoration, how can I pray for and serve the people around me?

Prayer

Father, You are holy, and You are merciful. Forgive me for the times I have ignored Your voice and followed my own way. Thank You for the forgiveness I have through Jesus Christ. Give me a heart that receives Your correction. Teach me to obey You, even when the process is painful and the waiting is long. Help me to pray for the country and community where You have placed me. Show me how to work for their good and serve faithfully today. Restore what needs restoring in my life, beginning with my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
