Psalm 119:17–24 invites us to ask God for understanding and direction. As strangers in this world, we need His Word to guide our choices and help us live faithfully as people who belong to Him.

“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
— Psalm 119:18 (KJV)
Over the past two days, we have reflected on walking with integrity and treasuring God’s Word in our hearts. Today, the psalmist reminds me that I also need God’s help to understand what I read.
He begins with a prayer: “Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.” He asks for God’s goodness with a purpose—to live and obey Him. That challenges me. When I ask God for help, am I also asking Him to use my life for His purposes?
Then comes this beautiful request: “Open thou mine eyes.” I can read a passage and still miss what God is teaching me. I need Him to open my understanding and make my heart willing to respond.
The next verse especially speaks to me: “I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.”
We live in this world, but our lasting home is with the Lord. We need His direction as we walk through a place whose values often differ from His. The expectations around us cannot be our final guide. God’s Word teaches us how to live as people who belong to Him.
Being strangers here does not mean withdrawing from our responsibilities. It means honouring God in them—loving our families, working faithfully, treating others with kindness, and choosing truth even when it costs us.
Even when people spoke against the psalmist, he continued to meditate on God’s statutes. He called God’s testimonies his delight and his counsellors. I want that to be true of me too.
Lord, this world is not my permanent home. Open my eyes to Your truth, and help me live each day according to Your ways.
Reflection
Am I letting the world’s expectations or God’s Word guide my choices? What do I need the Lord to help me understand and obey today?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your goodness and for the gift of Your Word. Open my eyes to understand its wonderful truths. As I live in this world, help me remember that I belong to You. Let Your Word guide my decisions, and give me grace to live by Your kingdom’s ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.
