Lord, Keep Me from Forgetting You

October 14, 2026Psalm 106:44By Paul

Psalm 106 reveals how quickly God’s people forgot His goodness and followed the ways of those around them. Yet He heard their cries and remembered His covenant. His mercy calls us to repent, resist the influences that lead us away from Him, and remain faithful beyond the moments when we need His help.

Reading Psalms 103 through 106, I see God’s goodness again and again. He forgives, provides, cares for His creation, and remains faithful to His promises. But in Psalm 106, I also see something uncomfortable: how quickly His people forgot.

They had witnessed His power. They had experienced His deliverance. Yet verse 13 says, “They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel.”

They forgot what He had done and stopped waiting for His direction. They followed their own desires, adopted the practices of the nations around them, and worshipped their idols. What others were doing began to shape their lives more than what God had spoken.

That makes me examine my own heart.

How quickly do I move from thanking God to worrying as though He has never provided? How easily do I ask for His guidance, then rush ahead without waiting? How often do I allow the world around me to shape my choices without considering whether they honour Him?

Psalm 106 shows the painful consequences of rebellion. Yet even there, God’s mercy is present. He heard His people’s cries, saw their distress, and remembered His covenant.

His faithfulness was greater than their repeated failures.

But this should never make me comfortable with disobedience. God’s mercy is not permission to keep turning away, expecting Him to rescue me whenever life becomes difficult. His kindness should soften my heart and draw me into genuine repentance.

I do not want to seek Him only when I need help. I want to remember Him when life is peaceful, when prayers have been answered, and when obedience asks me to stand apart from what others are doing.

Near the end, the psalmist prays:

“Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.” — Psalm 106:47, KJV

The prayer for rescue leads back to thanksgiving and worship. And the psalm closes by blessing the Lord from everlasting to everlasting.

Today, my prayer is simple: Lord, thank You for hearing me when I cry. Keep me close to You after the crisis has passed.

Reflection

Where have I allowed the habits around me to influence my choices more than God’s Word?

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for forgetting Your goodness and following my own way. Thank You for Your patience and mercy. Help me recognise the influences that draw me away from Your Word. Give me a repentant heart that waits for Your counsel and follows You faithfully. May I remember You in every season and praise You through the way I live. In Jesus’ name, amen.
