I Stopped Hiding My Sin then I Found My Hiding Place in Him

October 11, 2026Psalms 32:7By Paul

Psalm 32 is one of my favourite psalms because it speaks so personally to my life. I know something of the weight of guilt and the Lord’s discipline. But I also know the relief of confessing my sin and receiving His forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ, I can come honestly before God, find refuge in Him, and learn to follow His guidance willingly.

Yesterday, I reflected on how God has not treated me as my sins deserve. Today, while reading Psalm 32 in the New Living Translation, I found myself thinking about how personally I have experienced that mercy. This is one of my favourite psalms.

It speaks about the joy of being forgiven. It also speaks honestly about what happens when we refuse to confess our sin. I can relate to both. There were times when the Lord’s hand of discipline felt very heavy on me. I knew there were things I needed to bring before Him. Finally, I confessed and now, I can see things beginning to fall into place. That does not mean every difficulty disappeared. But something changed in my relationship with God. I could come honestly before Him instead of continuing to carry what I needed to confess.

Lord, You know my life. This psalm is very true for me.

The Joy of Being Forgiven

The beginning of this psalm makes me pause. What a blessing it is to be forgiven. We often think joy will come when our circumstances improve. When a problem is solved. When we have enough money. When something we have been waiting for finally happens. But here is a joy I should never overlook:

I can stand before God as someone He has forgiven.

He knows what I have done. He knows what nobody else knows and through His mercy, I do not have to keep hiding. An honest life does not mean I have never failed. It means I stop pretending before the God who already knows the truth.

When I Refused to Confess

David describes how deeply his silence affected him. I understand something of that weight. Keeping guilt hidden does not make it disappear. I may try to carry on with my responsibilities, but inside, I know something is wrong. Sometimes I want relief without repentance. I want peace, but I hesitate to admit what needs to change. This psalm challenges me.

Why am I holding on to something that is hurting my fellowship with God? Why am I trying to hide from the One who can forgive me? Looking back, I recognise His discipline in my own life. His correction was painful, but it brought me to a place where I could no longer keep avoiding the truth.

Lord, thank You for calling me back when I was unwilling to listen.

Finally, I Confessed

There is something powerful about that moment. I stopped trying to hide my guilt. I brought my sin before the Lord. Confession means being honest about what I have done. I cannot keep calling disobedience a small mistake simply because admitting it is uncomfortable. Lord, I was wrong. I said what I should not have said. I chose what I should not have chosen. I resisted what You were asking of me. Please forgive me. Help me turn away from it.

The New Testament gives us this assurance:

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 KJV

I may still need to apologise, rebuild trust, or accept consequences. But I can begin those things knowing that God’s forgiveness is real.

How Did My Guilt Go?

This is the question that brings me to Jesus. How can I be forgiven? How can a holy God welcome someone who has sinned against Him? Because of Jesus Christ.

My confession did not pay for my sin. Jesus did.

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
Ephesians 1:7 KJV

He died for our sins and rose again. I do not receive forgiveness because I have found the right words or suffered enough to deserve it. I receive it through faith in the Saviour who gave His life for me. When guilt returns to my thoughts, I need to remember where my hope rests. My forgiveness rests in what Jesus has done.

You Are My Hiding Place

Then I come to my key verse. David calls God his hiding place. That means so much to me. Earlier in the psalm, he was keeping his sin hidden. Now, having confessed, he finds safety in God Himself. I see a change I need in my own life. I can stop trying to conceal my guilt and come to the Lord for refuge.

He knows the truth about me, and I can trust Him. Being sheltered by Him does not mean I will never face trouble. It means I have Someone to turn to in the middle of it. The Lord who forgives me is also the Lord who watches over me. I do not need to run away from Him. Through Jesus, I can come near.

Lord, Teach Me to Follow Willingly

The next part of the psalm is especially precious to me. God promises guidance, instruction, and watchful care. After forgiveness, I still need help with how I live. Lord, guide my decisions. Teach me how to respond. Help me recognise the way You want me to go. Then comes the warning about the horse and mule. A bit sits in the animal’s mouth, and the bridle allows the handler to direct it. The picture is of an animal that needs restraint because it does not understand or willingly respond.

The warning makes me examine my own stubbornness. Do I listen when God’s Word corrects me? Or do I keep resisting until the consequences become painful? Do I wait for things to become unbearable before I finally obey? I do not want to live that way. God has given me His Word. I can ask for wisdom. I can receive correction and respond to it. Lord, give me a heart that listens before I have to be restrained. His guidance does not promise a life without hardship. But I can trust His wisdom more than my own impulses.

Come to Him While There Is Time

Verse 6 urges those who are godly to pray while God may be found. That gives me an opportunity to speak to anyone who is still carrying guilt and staying away from Him. Do not keep postponing your response. You do not have to make yourself worthy before coming to Jesus. Come honestly. Confess your sin and put your trust in Him. There is forgiveness through His death and resurrection. I know what it is like to need that mercy and I know that continuing to hide does not bring the peace I am looking for.

Come to the Lord. Bring Him the truth. Trust the Saviour who gave His life for you.

I Have a Reason to Rejoice

This psalm ends with rejoicing. When I think about the forgiveness I have received, I understand why. I have a reason to be glad in the Lord. He has heard my confession. He has shown me mercy. He is teaching me how to walk with Him. Psalm 32 is one of my favourite psalms because I can see so much of my own need in it—and so much of His goodness.

The God whose discipline brought me to repentance is the God in whom I now find refuge.

Reflection

Is there something I am still unwilling to confess honestly before God? Am I responding willingly to His Word, or resisting until the consequences become painful? How can I thank Jesus today for the forgiveness He has made possible?

Prayer

Father, thank You for receiving me when I come honestly before You. You know my sins, my excuses, and the things I have tried to hide. Help me confess them without pretending or shifting the blame. Thank You for Your correction in my life. Thank You for calling me back. Thank You for Jesus Christ, who died for my sins and rose again. Help me trust His finished work instead of trying to earn the forgiveness You offer through Him. You are my hiding place. Teach me to follow You willingly. Keep me from stubbornness. Give me a heart that listens to Your Word and responds with obedience. Guide me in making things right where I can. Help me accept responsibility and walk honestly before You. Let the joy of Your forgiveness fill my heart again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
