God Was Already Ahead of Us

September 23, 2026Philippians 4:19By Paul

Sometimes God’s provision becomes visible only when we look back and realize that He was already at work before we even knew what we would need.

God Was Already Ahead of Us

Recently, our family experienced something that made Philippians 4:19 very personal to me.

About a month ago, new neighbours moved in beside us. At that time, we were not looking for another vehicle. We would simply see them outside, say hello, have a little conversation, and continue with everyday life.

Nothing about their moving next door seemed especially significant.

But a few weeks later, things changed.

Our own vehicle began having problems, and we started thinking seriously about needing another car.

The timing was not ideal at all.

Our financial situation had already been difficult. I had been without work for almost six months after stepping away for my studies, and my wife was on maternity leave after being laid off while still on leave. We were certainly not in a season where we wanted to add another large expense.

Yet we needed reliable transportation.

Then, one ordinary day, our neighbour mentioned that they were getting another vehicle and planned to give their current SUV to the dealership as a trade-in.

When he told us how much the dealer was offering him, we were amazed.

The SUV was well maintained, looked almost new, and was exactly the type of practical vehicle that would work well for our family. He could probably have sold it privately for considerably more than the amount the dealership was offering.

We asked whether he would consider selling it to us instead.

He gladly agreed.

And he offered it to us for a price far below what a similar vehicle might normally have cost us.

Suddenly, something that had seemed financially unrealistic became possible.

But there was still another concern.

Would the vehicle pass its safety inspection? Would we purchase it only to discover that it needed hundreds or thousands of dollars in repairs?

It passed the safety inspection without requiring repairs.

Then the registration process went smoothly as well.

When everything was finished, I began thinking about the timing.

Before We Called, God Already Knew

Isaiah 65:24 (KJV)

“And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”

When our neighbours moved beside us about a month earlier, we were not looking for a car.

We did not know that our own vehicle would soon begin giving us problems.

We did not know that our neighbours would decide to purchase another vehicle.

We did not know that their SUV would become available.

We certainly did not know that they would be willing to sell it to us for a price that we could manage.

But God already knew what the coming weeks would hold.

God can be working on an answer before we are even aware that we are going to need one.

Our neighbours had already moved next door before our car problem appeared. Something that looked completely ordinary at the time later became part of an unexpected provision.

Isaiah 65:24 comes from a larger prophetic picture of God’s restoration, so it should not be treated as a promise that every believer will receive every material thing before asking. But it reminds us of something beautiful: our needs never take God by surprise.

We see today. God already knows tomorrow.

God Is More Than a Provider of Material Things

It would be easy to tell this story and conclude, “If you trust God, He will give you a car.”

That is not the lesson.

Philippians 4:19 should never turn God into someone we approach only because we want money, houses, vehicles, promotions, or easier circumstances.

In the same chapter, Paul speaks about knowing what it is like both to have plenty and to experience need.

Sometimes God’s provision is financial.

Sometimes it is an unexpected opportunity.

Sometimes it is another person.

Sometimes it is wisdom.

Sometimes it is strength to endure something that does not change immediately.

Sometimes His provision is peace while the circumstances remain difficult.

And sometimes the answer God gives looks very different from the answer we imagined.

Before We Knew Our Greatest Need, God Provided Jesus

The verse ends with the words “by Christ Jesus,” and that points us toward God’s greatest provision.

Long before we understood our deepest problem, God had already prepared the answer.

We needed forgiveness before we fully understood the seriousness of our sin.

We needed reconciliation with God before we understood how far humanity had wandered from Him.

We needed grace before we knew how incapable we were of saving ourselves.

We needed a Saviour before we even understood that we needed saving.

And God provided Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:8 (KJV)

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

That is the greatest example of God providing before we could ever provide for ourselves.

The car sitting in our driveway is something for which our family can sincerely thank God.

But the greatest evidence of God’s provision is not the car.

It is Jesus Christ.

The car may serve our family for a number of years.

Christ has given us something infinitely greater: forgiveness, reconciliation with God, hope, and eternal life.

So this experience has reminded me not merely to say, “God gave us something we needed.”

It has reminded me to say, “God knows what I cannot see, and because He has already given me Christ, I can trust Him with everything else.”

A Lesson in Looking Back

Sometimes we cannot recognize God’s providence while events are unfolding.

A new neighbour moves in.

A conversation happens.

Plans unexpectedly change.

A door closes.

Another opportunity appears.

At the time, none of these things seem connected.

Then later we look backward and realize that circumstances we barely noticed became part of something we desperately needed.

That does not mean we should try to find a miraculous explanation behind every coincidence.

But it does mean we can live with confidence that God sees a much larger picture than we do.

God can be working on an answer before we are even aware that we are going to need one.

And when we cannot yet see the answer, we can still trust the One who sees tomorrow.

Reflection

Is there something I am worried about today simply because I cannot yet see how it will work out? Can I trust that God already knows tomorrow’s needs, even though I can only see today’s circumstances? When God provides something I need, am I becoming more thankful for the gift—or more deeply in love with the Giver?

Prayer

Father, thank You that nothing in my life takes You by surprise. You know my needs before I understand them myself. Thank You for the unexpected ways You sometimes provide and for the ordinary people, circumstances, and opportunities You can use. Keep me from seeing You merely as someone who supplies material things. Teach me to trust You whether I have much or little, whether the answer comes quickly or whether I must wait. Above everything else, thank You for providing Jesus Christ. Before I understood the depth of my need, You had already provided a Saviour. Thank You for forgiveness, grace, reconciliation, hope, and eternal life through Him. When I cannot see how tomorrow will work out, remind me that tomorrow is already known to You. Help me trust Your heart even when I cannot yet see Your hand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
