Creation Is Waiting for Freedom

September 25, 2026Romans 8:21By Paul

Creation is groaning—but it is not groaning without hope. God has already promised that death, decay, suffering, and the curse will not have the final word.

Even Creation Is Waiting

When I read Romans 8:20–21, something caught my attention.

Creation itself was subjected to corruption.

Not willingly.

The world we see today—with sickness, death, decay, disasters, pain, brokenness, and everything eventually wearing away—is not creation as God originally intended it to remain.

When sin entered the world through humanity, its consequences reached farther than mankind alone. Genesis tells us that even the ground was affected by the fall.

And now Paul gives us this incredible picture:

Creation is waiting.

The trees, the earth, the animals, the oceans—the created world around us is living under the effects of a fallen world.

But Romans 8 does not leave creation without hope.

God subjected creation “in hope.”

There is another day coming.

The Groaning Has an Expiration Date

Romans says that the whole creation “groaneth and travaileth in pain.”

That description feels very familiar.

We live in a world that groans.

Our bodies groan.

Families experience pain.

People become sick.

Relationships break.

Wars happen.

Creation itself experiences destruction and decay.

Sometimes we look around and wonder, *Will the world always be like this?*

God's answer is no.

Creation is looking forward to freedom.

Romans 8:21 says that creation itself will one day be delivered from its bondage to corruption and share in the glorious liberty of God's children.

Think about that.

What God began in redemption is going somewhere.

Jesus did not come merely to make our difficult lives slightly better.

He came to defeat sin and death.

And one day, everything affected by the fall will finally see the fullness of God's restoring work.

We Are Waiting Too

Creation is not the only thing groaning.

Romans 8 says believers groan within ourselves while we wait for the redemption of our bodies.

Sometimes following Christ does not mean the pain immediately disappears.

We still experience sickness.

We still lose people we love.

Our bodies still become tired.

We still walk through disappointment.

But Christians suffer differently because we suffer with hope.

Our present condition is not our permanent condition.

Romans 8:18 says that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed.

The Christian hope is not pretending everything is fine.

It is knowing that everything will not always be like this.

If God Is for Us

And then Romans 8 becomes even more personal.

After speaking about suffering, groaning, waiting, redemption, and hope, Paul asks:

“If God be for us, who can be against us?”

The chapter does not promise that nothing will come against us.

It promises something much greater:

Nothing that comes against us can overturn what God has determined for those who belong to Christ.

Trouble cannot separate us.

Distress cannot separate us.

Persecution cannot separate us.

Famine cannot separate us.

Danger cannot separate us.

Death cannot separate us.

Life cannot separate us.

Nothing in creation can separate God's children from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What a way for this chapter to end.

Creation may groan.

You may groan.

I may groan.

But hope remains.

And This Hope Can Be Yours

Maybe you are reading this and you do not yet know Jesus Christ personally.

The promises at the end of Romans 8 are beautiful—but notice where this inseparable love is found:

“In Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sin brought separation, death, and brokenness into this world.

But Jesus Christ came for sinners.

He lived the life we could not live.

He took our sin upon Himself at the cross.

He paid the price we could never pay.

He died—and He rose again.

You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to Him.

Come to Christ.

Repent of your sin and place your trust in Jesus.

The same God who promises a future for groaning creation offers eternal life to everyone who comes to Him through His Son.

And when you belong to Christ, you can say with Paul:

If God is for me, who can be against me?

And:

Nothing can separate me from His love.

Reflection

When you look at the brokenness of this world, do you see only what is wrong—or do you remember what God has promised is coming? Is there something in your life right now that makes you feel like you are “groaning” while waiting on God? How does knowing that nothing can separate you from God's love in Christ change the way you face today's difficulties? Are you personally trusting in Jesus Christ and the salvation He offers?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that the brokenness we see around us will not last forever. Thank You that even creation is waiting in hope for the freedom You have promised. When I become discouraged by sickness, suffering, loss, or the condition of this world, remind me that You are still working and that Your plan is moving toward redemption. Help me live with hope while I wait. Thank You that if I belong to You, nothing can separate me from Your love. And for anyone reading this who does not yet know You, draw them to Yourself. Help them see what You accomplished for them at the cross and place their faith in You. Amen.
