Psalm 84 shows a deep longing to dwell in the presence of God. In the Old Testament, God revealed His presence in the tabernacle and temple, but through Jesus Christ, God now dwells in everyone who belongs to Him. This Psalm reminds us that His presence gives strength, refreshing, and hope as we journey toward our eternal home with Him. It also challenges us to treasure gathering with God’s people, because truly, one day in His presence is better than a thousand anywhere else.

God’s Dwelling Place
In the Old Testament, God revealed His presence among His people in a special way through the tabernacle and later the temple. People travelled to the place where God had chosen to make His name known. This is why Psalm 84 speaks so passionately about the courts and the house of God. But something extraordinary happened through Jesus Christ. God came to us.
Jesus Christ, God the Son, came into this world, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. And when a person comes to Christ in faith, God does not merely invite that person to occasionally visit His presence.
He comes to dwell within them by His Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 3:16 (KJV)
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”
The dwelling place of God is no longer confined to a building made with hands. A church building may be a wonderful place where believers gather, worship, pray, hear the Word, and fellowship together—but the building itself is not what makes it holy.
God dwells in His people.
If you belong to Jesus Christ, think about what that means. The God whom the psalmist longed to be near has chosen to dwell within you. Are we conscious of His presence? Do our conversations reflect that He is with us?Do the things we watch, the places we go, the decisions we make, and the way we treat others show that our lives belong to Him?
We often ask God to “come near,” while forgetting that through His Spirit He is already dwelling within those who belong to Christ.
What a privilege—and what a call to holiness.
Even the Sparrow Found a Home
Psalm 84:3 (KJV)
“Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.”
Even the little sparrow found a home near the presence of God. What a beautiful picture of the gospel. Perhaps you feel insignificant. Perhaps you feel too sinful. Perhaps you think you have wandered too far from God. Perhaps you wonder whether there could really be a place for you. There is. Jesus said:
John 6:37 (KJV)
“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
There is room for you in Christ.
You do not become God’s dwelling place by becoming religious, attending church, performing enough good works, or trying to make yourself worthy. We are sinners separated from a holy God. But Jesus Christ took our sin upon Himself on the cross and rose again from the dead. Come to Him. Repent of your sin and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. The little sparrow found a home.
And the sinner who comes to Christ will not be turned away.
There Is Strength in His Presence
Psalm 84:5 (KJV)
“Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them.”
The person who dwells with God learns that his strength does not have to come from himself. There will be days when we feel weak. There will be responsibilities that overwhelm us. There will be seasons when we simply cannot see how we will continue. But blessed is the person whose strength is in the LORD. God does not always remove the difficult road. Sometimes He strengthens us to walk through it.
He Refreshes Us in the Valley
Psalm 84 does not describe a life without valleys. Verse 6 speaks about passing through the valley of Baca. They still had to pass through it. But the valley was not their destination. What looked dry could become a place of refreshing because God was with them. Some seasons of our lives feel like valleys. We pray for the situation to change, yet God may first change and strengthen us while we walk through it. His presence can bring refreshing even in a place we would never have chosen for ourselves. The blessing is not that we will never walk through valleys. The blessing is that we do not walk through them without God.
From Strength to Strength
Psalm 84:7 (KJV)
“They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.”
The journey continued until they appeared before God in Zion. For the believer, there is something beautiful here. We too are travelling toward a destination. Our final hope is not merely to experience God inwardly in this present life. One day faith will become sight. Through Christ, we look forward to being with Him forever.
The Bible ends with the New Jerusalem and this wonderful declaration:
Revelation 21:3 (KJV)
“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them…”
Today He dwells in us by His Spirit. One day we will dwell with Him forever. So keep walking. From strength to strength. The valley is not the end of the journey.
Better Is One Day
Then comes one of the most beautiful declarations in the Psalm:
Psalm 84:10 (KJV)
“For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
Think about those words.
One day with God is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Yet how easily gathering with God’s people becomes negotiable in our lives. Sunday comes, and almost anything can take its place. Work, Shopping, Sports, Entertainment, Travel, Appointments.
There is nothing magical about entering a church building. God does not suddenly begin dwelling in us when we walk through its doors.
But Christians were never meant to follow Christ alone. We need worship. We need the preaching of God’s Word. We need prayer. We need fellowship. We need encouragement. We need other believers and other believers need us.
So, whenever we are able, let us deliberately set apart Sunday to gather with the people of God—not because attending a service earns salvation, but because a heart that loves God should increasingly love being with His people.
If the psalmist could say,
“A day in thy courts is better than a thousand,”
how much more should those who know Christ treasure the privilege of worshipping together?
No Good Thing Will He Withhold
Psalm 84:11 (KJV)
“For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”
This does not mean God promises to give us everything we want. Sometimes what we desperately want would not ultimately be good for us. Sometimes God’s goodness appears in giving. Sometimes His goodness appears in withholding. Sometimes His goodness appears in making us wait.
But we can trust this:
God will never withhold from His children anything that is truly good according to His perfect wisdom and purpose.
He is our sun when the way seems dark. He is our shield when we need protection. He gives grace for today and glory is still ahead.
Reflection
The great question of Psalm 84 is not simply: “Do I go to God’s house?” For those who are in Christ, the deeper question is: “Since God has made me His dwelling place, does my life show that I am aware of His presence?” Do I long for Him? Do I seek my strength in Him? Do I allow Him to refresh me in the valleys? Do I treasure gathering with His people? Am I walking toward my eternal home with Him?
Prayer
Father, thank You that through Jesus Christ I can come into Your presence. Thank You that You do not turn away the sinner who comes to You in faith. Help me never to take Your presence for granted. Make me conscious that Your Holy Spirit dwells within me. Let my thoughts, words, choices, relationships, and daily life honour You. When I am weak, let my strength be found in You. When I walk through valleys, refresh my soul. Take me from strength to strength and keep my eyes fixed on the day when I will be with You forever. Give me a heart that longs to worship You and that values gathering with Your people. May I truly understand that one day in Your presence is better than a thousand anywhere else. Teach me to trust Your goodness even when You withhold something I desire, knowing that You will never withhold what is truly good according to Your perfect will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
